Neil Lennon Quote on Celtic’s Win over Barcelona

The players are heroes, they are heroes to me. I can’t speak highly enough of their performance tonight and they will go down in the history books of the club as the team who beat probably the best team in the¬†world.

~ Neil Lennon, 8 November 2012

Celtic 2 – 1 Barcelona

Granted it was just the group stages, but it was still as big as Lennon says if Celtic make it to the knock-out round.

Xavi Quote on Celtic’s Anti-Football Style

People rightly consider that Celtic use an anti-football system, but Chelsea have done the same and they are now champions of Europe.

Xavi, Iniesta, and Messi prepare for a trip to the Anti-Football Paradise of Glasgow

Celtic pulled out a historic victory of Barcelona, reminding everyone that an organized defense is a good idea. I really like that later in the same interview Xavi attempted to throw Celtic a compliment by saying, “And we know what the atmosphere will be like because Glasgow is a paradise for football but we are all experienced players and it will not worry us.” You mean, a paradise for anti-football, right?

Steve McManaman on El Clasico

We knocked them out of the Champions League semi-final in 2002. We beat them 2-0 at their place in the first leg and the celebrations in our dressing room were incredible. It was mainly led by the Madrid-born players because they knew how big the victory was, so you fully understood it all then.

Steve McManaman reflecting on playing in El Clasico for Real Madrid. It’s more than a game.

Frank de Boer on Ajax verus Real Madrid

We were heavenly, world class. This was Ajax at their best.

~ Frank de Boer, 22 November 1995

Ajax and Real Madrid have not been on equal footing for a while, but in 1995, Ajax was at the top of the Club world. In their Champions League title defense during the 1995 – 1996 season, Ajax stormed to a 2-0 win over Real Madrid. Though they eventually fell to Juventus in the Final, this was one of their best performances in the Champions League. The two teams play again tomorrow in the group stages.
